High-Temperature Insulation with Alumina Long and Short Fibers
High-Temperature Insulation with Alumina Long and Short Fibers
As industries push the limits of performance in high-heat and high-stress environments, the demand for advanced materials like alumina fibers has surged. At Vulcan Shield Global (VSG), we specialise in the research, development and production of both alumina long fibers and alumina short fibers, offering tailored thermal and mechanical solutions for a wide range of sectors including aerospace, energy, petrochemicals, automotive, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
What Are Alumina Fibers?
Alumina fibers are ceramic fibers primarily composed of aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), known for their exceptional thermal resistance, mechanical strength, and chemical stability. These fibers are typically classified into two types:
Alumina Long Fibers (Continuous Fibers)
Alumina Short Fibers (Discontinuous Fibers)
Both offer unique performance benefits and are engineered to meet the demands of extreme operating conditions.
Alumina Long Fibers: Strength, Structure & Composite Reinforcement
Our alumina long fibers come in 4 main series, M-99, C-85, F-72 and our newest addition, B-70. These are continuous fibers produced using the internationally recognised sol-gel method, ideal for reinforcing composites used in high-temperature structural applications. We are able to weave our alumina long fibers into various forms like woven fabric, woven tape, braided sleeves, sewing thread, braided rope etc. The individual fibers can also be used in ceramic matrix composite (CMC) applications.
Key Benefits:
High Strength & Modulus: Maintains structural integrity under thermal and mechanical stress.
Extreme Temperature Resistance: Continuous use up to 1300°C, with peak resistance up to 1600°C.
Versatile Matrix Compatibility: Suitable for polymer, ceramic, and metal matrix composites (MMC).
Flexible Textiles: Can be woven into fabrics, tapes, braided sleeves, ropes and sewing thread.
Electronics: Mobile phone backplane reinforcement, thermally stable insulation films.
Automotive & EVs: High-strength lightweight components for electric vehicles.
Alumina Short Fibers: Thermal Insulation & Lightweight Protection
Alumina short fibers, such as our M-F-72 bulk fiber, N-F-1600 Needled Blankets and FP-F-72 Fiber Paper provide exceptional insulation and thermal protection while being light weight and easily moulded to suit different applications.
Key Benefits:
Low Thermal Conductivity: Superior heat retention and energy efficiency.
High-Temperature Capability: Continuous use temperature rating to 1500°C.
Lightweight & Resilient: Ideal for weight-sensitive applications.
Non-Hazardous & Chemically Stable: Resistant to acids, alkalis, and oxidising environments.
Industry Applications:
Petrochemical Furnaces: Blanket linings, gaskets, and expansion joint insulation.
Glass Manufacturing: Roller insulation, furnace linings, and mold protection.
Battery & Energy Storage: Sagger insulation in battery production, thermal containment for power systems.
Laser & Plasma Cutting: Pipe and surface insulation from high heat sources.
